Award-winning Ghanaian musician and “Takoradi” hitmaker Papa Elliot has explained why he chose not to relocate to Accra after achieving success with his popular song.

Papa Elliot made the revelation during an interview with Macall Mensah on YFM’s Y Entertainment Podium, where he reflected on his career and the decision to remain in Takoradi at a time when many emerging musicians were moving to Accra in search of greater opportunities.

According to the artiste, he was already pursuing another professional field outside music in Takoradi at the time and therefore did not see the need to relocate to Ghana’s capital simply because he had released a successful song.

He explained that he strongly believed he could build a successful music career from Takoradi without necessarily moving to Accra.

Why Papa Elliot Stayed in Takoradi

Papa Elliot said his decision was influenced by his belief that success in music did not necessarily require relocating to Accra.

While some of his colleagues moved to the capital to position themselves closer to major industry players, record labels, media platforms and other opportunities, he chose to remain in Takoradi.

The musician explained that he was already working in another field and had established his life in Takoradi, making a relocation to Accra less appealing at the time.

He also believed that his talent and music could take him to the next level while operating from Takoradi.

His position reflected the confidence he had in the potential of the Western Region’s creative industry and his ability to build a career without following the path taken by many other artistes.

‘Takoradi’ Became a Major Hit

Papa Elliot gained widespread recognition with his hit song “Takoradi”, which became closely associated with the city and its identity.

The song helped establish him as one of the notable artistes to emerge from Takoradi and contributed to the city’s presence in Ghana’s music conversation.

However, despite the success of the song, Papa Elliot did not immediately follow the traditional route of relocating to Accra to pursue bigger opportunities.

He believed he could make it from Takoradi, just as he had seen other musicians build successful careers without necessarily abandoning their hometowns.

A Different Approach to the Music Industry

Papa Elliot’s experience highlights the long-running debate about whether artistes from Ghana’s regions must relocate to Accra to achieve national success.

For decades, Accra has remained the centre of Ghana’s entertainment industry, attracting musicians, actors, producers and other creatives seeking access to media exposure, industry executives and major commercial opportunities.

However, the growth of digital platforms and social media has increasingly made it possible for artistes to promote and distribute their work from different parts of the country.

Papa Elliot’s decision to remain in Takoradi after his breakthrough reflects his personal belief that an artiste can build a successful career without necessarily relocating.

His story also highlights the importance of believing in one’s environment while pursuing opportunities beyond it.

Speaking about his journey, the “Takoradi” hitmaker maintained that, at the time, he saw no compelling reason to leave the city because he believed he could achieve his musical ambitions from Takoradi.

His experience remains an interesting chapter in the story of Takoradi’s music scene and the artistes who have contributed to putting the Western Region on Ghana’s entertainment map.
