Over 600 Apply for Black Stars Job as GFA Begins Coaching Search

The race to become the next head coach of the Ghana national football team has attracted massive global interest, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirming that more than 600 applications have been submitted for the role.

GFA President Kurt Okraku disclosed the figure following the dismissal of former head coach Otto Addo on March 31, 2026. The decision came despite Addo successfully guiding Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024 after a previous stint with the team, had been tasked with rebuilding the Black Stars following the departure of Chris Hughton. His earlier tenure was marked by a memorable achievement—leading Ghana past Nigeria to secure a place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the overwhelming number of applications, Okraku noted that the response highlights the global appeal and prestige of the Black Stars job.

“We have received over 600 applications for the Black Stars job,” he said, adding that the GFA is taking its time to carefully evaluate each candidate.

According to him, the association’s priority is to appoint a coach with the right experience, tactical expertise, and vision that aligns with the long-term development of Ghanaian football. He also revealed that a final decision is expected within one to two weeks.

Both local and international coaches are being considered, with the GFA promising a transparent and thorough selection process aimed at restoring confidence in the team and improving performance on the global stage.

The urgency surrounding the appointment is heightened by upcoming international friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May. These matches are expected to serve as crucial preparation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana has been drawn into a challenging group alongside Panama, Croatia, and England, making the choice of the next head coach a critical one. The new manager will be expected to quickly assess the squad, implement a clear tactical identity, and build team cohesion within a short period.

With the clock ticking and expectations high, the GFA faces a crucial decision that could shape Ghana’s fortunes on football’s biggest stage.
